Project Description

The project activities are divided into several WPs, arranged in order to allow the integration of all the foreseen activities without duplication and overlapping of works, and organized to achieve the final aim of providing guidelines for material selection and qualification process.

The Project structure involves the following workpackages:

WP1 – Project management

WP2 - Scenarios and testing programme definition

•State of the art of the technical and standard/guidelines scenario, including relevant R&D and pilot projects already carried out and in progress.

•Contact with regulatory bodies and Institutes looking for collaboration/sharing of info/external contribution.

•Transportation scenario definition: linepipe type, geometry and grade, operational range (safety factor, pressure, temperature), gas mixture (from H2NG blends to 100% H2, impurities content).

•Analysis and review of H2-related failure mechanics and integrity requirements so to identify those more pertinent for the H2/H2NG gaseous transportation.

•Initial definition of both laboratory and full scale testing to be carried in WP5 and WP6.

WP3 - Materials supply

•Linepipes supply, both new and vintage, coming from different manufacturing routes (longitudinal welded, seamless) and representative of future and existing H2 transmission pipelines.

•Linepipes basic material characterization.

WP4 – Fitness for service

•Develop updated models for the integrity assessment of H2 transport pipelines based on the gaps identified in literature

•Refine the requirements for the small scale testing in WP5 and the full scale testing in WP6

Perform scoping FEA modelling on dents and corrosion defects to feed into the integrity assessment guidance

WP5 - Laboratory testing

•Selection of appropriate test protocols for testing in gaseous hydrogen

•Laboratory testing on both linepipe materials and seam welds adopting both already standardized approach and advanced material testing to investigate specific FFS related inputs as defined by the WP3.

WP6 - Full scale testing

•Long term full scale testing on realistically damaged samples by applying pipeline relevant loading conditions in high pressure gaseous H2

•Trial of various ILI technologies to assess effects of H2 exposure on material properties and potentially on defect morphology

WP7 - Results analysis and recommendations issue

•Results analysis

•Draft of recommendations/guidelines for material selection and qualification process for both new and vintage pipelines

•Suggestions for ILI when gaseous H2-H2NG linepipes are inspected

WP8 – Dissemination

•Dissemination and interaction with external bodies

•Final workshop open to the public audience

•Final recommendations issues in terms of guidelines for qualifying pipeline materials for H2
